An investigation is underway into what caused a fire at a derelict care home in Sandown.

Crews from the town, along with firefighters from Shanklin, Ryde and Newport, were called to Carter Street just after 4.30pm yesterday (Sunday).

A blaze had broke out in the bedroom of the former Stonehaven Care Home, according to Hampshire and the Isle of Wight Fire and Rescue Service.

Hampshire Constabulary officers were also in attendance at the incident.

Carter Street was blocked while crews tackled the flames.

Six breathing apparatus, two thermal imaging cameras and three hosereel jets were used to help put the blaze out.

Firefighters also used one covering jet, one safety jet and positive pressure ventilation.

The fire was put out after around two hours.

The stop message was received at 6.23pm.

We're awaiting a comment from Hampshire Constabulary.
