Free Security Checks For Eligible Islanders Thanks To The Bobby Scheme

John Eldridge

Security checks, fire advice and fitting carbon monoxide or burglar alarms - they are some of the free services on offer for eligible Islanders or Islanders over the age of 65.

The Bobby Scheme - which is run by charity Blue Lamp Trust - is inviting Islanders to refer others or sign up for the service yourself, which can be tailored to suit your needs.

The idea is to make Islanders feel safe and secure in their homes, John Eldridge, the Bobby Scheme Fitter told Isle of Wight Radio:

“We can do the full survey or come out and do specific things, like fit sensory smoke alarms for people hard of hearing and test smoke alarms  - it is really what people feel comfortable with.”

John, who is a retired policeman, says they have had to adapt the service during the pandemic. They only went out for emergencies, for example when someone lost their keys.

He added:

“We have been doing some work with the domestic violence services on the Island - where maybe one of the parties had to leave the property and we re-secure the property to keep people safe in their homes.

“We have also been doing a lot with smoke alarms and carbon monoxide detectors… If we have got the time I am happy to stay and talk to you about fire safety, electrical safety and internet safety or scams so you are up to date!”

“We are still out there, we can tailor the service and it is a FREE service, we are out there if you have any concerns then please give us a call.”

Bobby Scheme fitters are all uniformed and vetted by the Hampshire Constabulary.

They will take a coronavirus test on the day they visit your property and call you half an hour before they arrive to let you know they are on their way.

You will be eligible for the service if you are:

  • Over 65
  • If you are considered ‘vulnerable’ ie have a long term illness
  • Islanders with disabilities
  • If you are a  repeat victim of crime
  • If you are a victim of burglary

Anyone who is eligible for the scheme can request a visit (which is available all year round) via the website here, or you can call 03007770157
