Former Made On The Isle Of Wight Shop Could Become Houses

The former Made on the Isle of Wight shop and garden centre could be demolished to be turned into houses.

Plans have been submitted to the Isle of Wight Council by Henry Morris to build two four-bed houses in the style of ‘modern interpretations of a converted rural barn’ on the site of the former Bullen Mead Nursery, on Bullen Road, between Nettlestone and Ryde.

To make space for the new family houses, garages and amenity outbuildings, which will have a playroom and outdoor kitchen area, the old barn and glasshouses will be demolished.

The shop, which sold products exclusively made on the Island, shut in 2016, with planning documents citing insufficient footfall as the reason for its demise and talks have been ongoing to develop the brownfield site since 2017.

In planning documents, it was said the landowner Robin Courage, Isle of Wight Day founder and former High Sheriff of the Isle of Wight, was looking to build six houses on the site but following talks with the council, it is now considered only two would be acceptable.

Previously, planning permission was given in July 2016 to change the use of the retail barn into a home but that has now expired.

The designs for the new houses will take reference from a ‘rural past’, with planning documents saying the ‘use of materials combined with the layout and landscaping approach leads to a highly responsible and respectful solution which will enhance the context and character, while allowing sensitive change to take place.’
