Fishing Vessel Off Shanklin Hauls Suspected Bomb Aboard

A fishing vessel anchored off of Shanklin has hauled aboard a suspected World War 2 bomb aboard this afternoon (Saturday).

According to Marine Traffic, the 23-foot fishing vessel ‘Blue Fin’ is approximately one mile from shore.

Other vessels in the area have been advised to avoid the vessel and the area surrounding it by HM Coastguard, as the two crew members on board await specialist help from the Ordnance Disposal Team.

An HM Coastguard spokesperson said:

"At just after 10.53am this morning (23rd January), HM Coastguard received a report from a vessel with two people on board that it had pulled up suspected ordnance in its anchor, approximately one mile off Shanklin Beach, Isle of Wight.

"The Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD) was made aware and a team has been sent to assist the vessel, which is now attached to a buoy and in a stationary position.

"For the time being, all other vessels within the vicinity of this vessel have been requested to keep clear."
