'Educate and Enforce' - Police Road Safety Campaign Comes To Isle Of Wight

Cracking down on speeding - and ensuring Islanders observe road safety - are among the aims of specialist officers visiting the Isle of Wight today (Saturday).

The Hampshire and Thames Valley Road Safety team will be looking to educate - and enforce where necessary.

As coronavirus restrictions ease, more vehicles are returning to the roads increasing the risk of accidents.

The team arrived here yesterday (Friday). Today, they're out and about speaking to residents, as well as cracking down on those speeding.

Speaking exclusively to Isle of Wight Radio, Sergeant Scott Kerr said it's all about making roads safer. He said:

"People have not driven for a while and they're getting back into the routine of driving, or using pushbikes or walking across the road that maybe busier than it has over the last few months.

"It's to bring back to the forefront of people's minds road safety so that we can all look after each over and keep people safe."

Sergeant Kerr remained tight-lipped over where enforcement officers will be camped out today, but warned it "could be anywhere".

He added:

"Any enforcement we're going to do, obviously we're not going to let the cat out of the bag as to where we're going to be!

"But there will be some speeding enforcement and other offences that are detected that will be dealt with. That's something at the minute that we're going to keep to ourselves.

"All I can say is prevention is better the cure, so we're just saying to people on the Island to be mindful of road safety and if they can engage with us at the time then please do.

"And if there are any offences that we feel that need to be dealt with appropriately through people being issues tickets than that's what will happen."
