East Cowes Man Charged After Disruption At Town Council Meeting

An East Cowes man has been charged and will appear in court, following the disruption of a town council meeting in March.

On March 31, Simon Wheeler entered a meeting of East Cowes Town Council (ECTC), where the Norris Castle planning application was being discussed.

Wheeler, 55, had previously been convicted of using threatening, abusive and insulting words with the intent to cause fear of unlawful violence towards Cllr Karl Love, a member of both ECTC and the Isle of Wight Council.

As part of his conviction, Wheeler was given a 12-month restraining order to stay away from Cllr Love.

The March 31 meeting was adjourned, police were called and arrested a 55-year-old man who was bailed until April 28.

A Hampshire Constabulary spokesperson confirmed today (Tuesday), Wheeler has now been charged with breaching a restraining order as well as using threatening or abusive words or behaviour likely to cause harassment, alarm or distress.

Wheeler is due to appear before the Isle of Wight Magistrates’ Court on May 31 after being given bail with conditions.
