A controlled explosion was a carried out by Portsmouth's Royal Navy Bomb Disposal unit at around 3pm.

Isle of Wight Police said:

"Dog walkers always find the most random things. This was a 45 minute walk from the road. It was raining heavily and was quite foggy.

"PC McDonald and PC Pegler were deployed to the scene and located the device...

"EOD (Bomb Disposal) attended and detonated the device at approximately 15.00 hours which made a very loud ‘bang’."
