Calling Isle Of Wight Red Squirrel Lovers! Can You Help Molly With Her Study?

Red Squirrel lovers on the Isle of Wight are needed to help Molly complete her dissertation research!

Second-year Bath Spa student Molly Harrold, who is studying conservation biology, is studying the Isle of Wight's Red Squirrels diets!

She wants to find out if they have any food preferences in comparison with other things they can eat like fruit or veg.

Also, does it vary from garden to garden?

Islanders who feed Red Squirrels are being asked to separate nuts and seeds in their feeders and by weighing the contents out after feeding, you can get an idea as to what tickles their fancy!

Molly, who is "curious" about the subject says it will hopefully be useful for Islanders who like to feed the Red Squirrels!

She told Isle of Wight Radio:

"The reason we are doing it is because I have spent years coming to the Isle of Wight for holidays and things and have really enjoyed seeing the Red Squirrels - on the mainland, we are just stuck with the grey ones and I think it is important we have as much information as possible as they are a really fascinating species.

"It [the research] is open to anyone who would like to get involved...If you can take part in the entire four weeks that's great, if it is just for a week - that is great as well."

Islanders are being asked to collect the data during June.

Find more details about their diet via Wight Squirrel Project here.

You can email Molly with your findings at [email protected]
