Calling Isle Of Wight Paddle Boarders! For The Pier2Pier Swim

Paddle boarders are needed for this year’s Pier2Pier Swim race which is able to go ahead this summer (August) for its 68th year.

The event, which is organised by IOW Marlins Masters Swim Club had to be cancelled last year because of the pandemic, meaning entries have rolled over to this year.

50 Islanders and 100 people from the mainland will come over for the event on Saturday the 7 August.

The swimmers start at Sandown Pier and swim across the 1.8 miles of the Bay to finish on the beach outside the Shanklin/Sandown Rowing Club.

Bob Cooper, the event’s safety officer told Isle of Wight Radio the swimmers can raise money for their own charities, he said:

“We raise money for our stakeholders like the Lifeboat, the rowing club and the kayaking club who help us run the event - so entry fee donations go to those charities.

“I want to thank all the hoteliers and ferry firms for honouring the bookings from last year - we have 50 Islanders swimming and 100 people from the mainland.

“We have about 15 kayakers who have registered but we need another ten at least. Also this year, for the first time we are going to introduce paddle boarders - so any who want to take on the challenge alongside the swimmers will be most welcome.”

To ensure the safety of the swimmers, the crews of the Sandown/Shanklin and the Ryde Inshore Independent Lifeboats, and members of the Shanklin Deep Sea Fishing Club provide a powered craft.

The first line of safety is supplied by kayakers, supervised by the Isle of Wight Kayak Club.

Anyone who is a kayaker, canoeist or paddle boarder wanting to assist, is asked to contact [email protected]
