There are fears that bird flu has caused the death of a number of swans at Ryde Canoe Lake - according to a wildlife expert.

It's thought as many as seven swans have sadly died in recent weeks - including four in the last few days.

The IOW Wild Bird Rehabilitation said it has spoken to a  number of partner agencies on the Island, including DEFRA, Island Roads, police wildlife officer, RSPB and local councillors.

Kay Ounsworth, from the group, says the deaths are extremely concerning and is urging people to stay away from the canoe lake on the esplanade.

She said:

"I've just spoken with the wildlife officer and they are going to be liaising with DEFRA to get confirmation of what is occurring at the lake.

"They will be working out a plan in regards to ailing birds ASAP.

"Please stay away from the lake.

"If the area is given the all clear word will be put out."

If anyone discovers a distressed or dead swan, they should call DEFRA  on on 0345 933 5577.

*UPDATED 12.40am

*Police have now cordoned off the canoe lake.
