Appeal For Isle Of Wight "Safe Haven" As Afghan Families Flee Taliban

Displaced families from northern provinces who fled their homes amid the violence take shelter in a public park in Kabul, Afghanistan. Sky News (C).

A charity is asking for urgent help to offer Afghan families, whose lives are said to be in danger, a "safe haven" on the Isle of Wight.

Charity Community Action Isle of Wight is assisting in the nationwide search for safe homes.

It comes after the Taliban seized control of large parts of Afghanistan - including the capital Kabul, and follows the withdrawal of Western forces in the country.

Philippa Daley, from the charity, says many Afghan families had relatives employed by the British Government in the country, which puts them at risk.

Speaking to Isle of Wight Radio, she said:

"The families we're seeking to relocate through the scheme, their lives are in danger. If we look in the recent events that have unfolded, very sadly, in Afghanistan over the last few days.

"These are people whose lives are in immediate danger. As we saw, the Defence Minister [Ben Wallace] broke down when being interviewed yesterday.

"These are people that will get... there is a risk to people who are left behind and we are trying to find provisions to house these people and provide a safe haven for them."

The charity is looking for landlords to come forward and offer their properties at an affordable rate.

It is part of a Government scheme to bring some of those families affected to the UK for their safety.

"It could be a flat, a larger house, and the size of the family relocated would be dependent on the offer of accommodation", Philippa said.

If you think you can help, you can call Philippa on 07940 566 905 or email the charity on [email protected].
