Contractors working in Sandown have unearthed what is believed to be a time capsule, dating back to the late 1800s.

Ryde-based Harrison Construction Ltd made the discovery as they carried out work to demolish the former Margrettes Pool & Snooker Hall in Leeds Street.

Workers found a glass jar with a copy of the Isle of Wight Chronicle inside. The paper is a Sandown edition dated Thursday August 1, 1872.

Adverts in the Chronicle, which cost three-halfpence, include S. Sothcott's Bathing Machines, J. Duff & Sons Bathing Machine Proprietors and G. Brown Pharmaceutical Chemist.

The firm posted:

"We’re currently looking after this item, if anyone has any suggestions for a new home please let us know."
