A young carer from the Isle of Wight recently had the extraordinary opportunity to meet King Charles, Queen Camilla and Prime Minister Keir Starmer at a special reception at Windsor Castle, highlighting the vital work of paid and unpaid carers across the UK.

Elliott Vince, 17, from Newport, who cares for his mum, attended the event representing Barnardo’s Isle of Wight Young Carers service, alongside project worker Jodie Woodhouse.

Elliott described the experience as “really privileged and honoured,” adding:

"It felt surreal arriving at Windsor Castle and seeing so many important people in one place.
"I was nervous at first, but it was amazing to have the chance to talk with the King and Queen, and even the Prime Minister."

He explained to Keir Starmer that one of the issues closest to his heart was long waiting lists for mental health services, which the Prime Minister acknowledged and agreed should be addressed.

Elliott also spoke with King Charles about his caring role, who told him he was “very proud of the hard work” he does.

Last summer, Elliott also shared his story at Barnardo’s annual reception in Parliament, highlighting the difference the Isle of Wight Young Carers service and the local Family Hub have made in his life.

He said:

"Barnardo’s gave me a safe place, a family away from home, where I could be cared for rather than being the one always caring for others.
"It’s helped me discover so much about myself and my identity, and gave me the confidence to speak in front of so many people in Westminster."

Barnardo’s Isle of Wight Young Carers service supports children and young people who care for a family member with a disability or long-term illness.

Laura Groves, children’s services manager for Barnardo’s Isle of Wight Family Centres, said:

"Young carers can often be hidden from support services, so we were delighted Elliott could share his experiences at Windsor Castle.
"Our service provides crucial support to children who take on caring responsibilities, helping them manage their education, health, and wellbeing while connecting with others in similar situations."

Barnardo’s Isle of Wight Young Carers relies on support from local groups and businesses, including the Rotary Club, Sandown Lions, WI, and Heroes Comic Book Shop, whose recent fundraising event helped support activities for young carers.
