From national gymnastics competitions to regional regattas and agricultural shows, 2025 has been a standout year for dozens of Isle of Wight community groups — thanks in part to Wightlink in the Community.
The ferry company’s sponsorship scheme helps Island organisations with cross-Solent travel, supporting youth sports teams, arts groups, environmental projects and more to access events, competitions and training on the mainland.
This year alone, the programme supported 24 sports groups, 13 arts organisations and six environmental or conservation projects — continuing a tradition that began in 1987.
Katy Taylor, Wightlink’s Chief Executive, said:
“For almost 40 years, we’ve supported the Island community by providing cross-Solent travel for local groups.
"It’s always inspiring to see what they achieve — and to know we’ve played a small part in helping them get there.”
Among the 2025 recipients were Wight Gymnasts’ XCEL team, Ryde Rowing Club, and the Isle of Wight Young Farmers, who travelled to the mainland for competitions, training and events.
The Wightlink Cycle Race Team also continued its strong season with podium finishes across multiple disciplines.
Sian Grove from the Isle of Wight Young Farmers said:
“We’re incredibly thankful to Wightlink for giving our members the chance to get off the Island, meet new people and gain valuable experiences.”
The scheme also supports creative and performing arts groups, environmental projects and inclusive sports initiatives such as Sporting Opportunities Isle of Wight, which offers athletics, swimming, and multisport sessions for athletes with learning disabilities.
Deborah Percy from the charity said:
“Our athletes thrive through opportunities to compete and grow – Wightlink’s support helps us make those experiences possible.”
Applications are now open for the 2026 Wightlink in the Community scheme, which will support travel between 1 January and 31 December 2026.
