Wightlink Ferry Crew Rescue Swimmer Attempting Solent Crossing

A lone swimmer attempting to cross the Solent was rescued by the crew of a Wightlink ferry after getting into difficulty in challenging conditions.

The incident unfolded on Saturday evening, shortly after St Faith departed Fishbourne for Portsmouth.

Crew members, led by Captain Bill, spotted the swimmer in the eastern Solent and became increasingly concerned after noticing they were making little progress despite continuing to swim towards the mainland.

Although the individual initially declined assistance, the combination of the tide and strong winds meant they were at risk of being swept further into busy shipping lanes.

Working alongside Solent Coastguard and other responding vessels, the crew of St Faith safely recovered the swimmer before taking them ashore.

A Wightlink spokesperson said:

"Wightlink's St Faith assisted in the recovery of a swimmer in the eastern Solent on Saturday evening after crew became concerned for his safety.

"Although he initially declined assistance, officers observed that he was making no meaningful progress against the tide and wind and was at risk of being carried further into busy shipping lanes.

"St Faith passengers were updated throughout the incident. Working alongside Solent Coastguard and other responding vessels, the swimmer was safely recovered and taken ashore."

No further information about the swimmer or their condition has been released.
