A yellow weather warning has been issued for the Isle of Wight, with forecasters warning of heavy rain and the potential for strong winds tonight (Wednesday) into Thursday morning.

The alert, issued by the Isle of Wight Met Service, says a small but powerful low-pressure system is expected to pass near Southern England from 7pm this evening until 11am on Thursday.

Forecasters say the main threat is significant rainfall, with up to 40mm of rain possible in some areas, increasing the risk of localised flooding.

Flood-prone spots and areas with poor drainage are likely to be affected, and drivers are advised to take extra care as surface water and spray could make roads hazardous.

If the system tracks slightly further north, strong winds could also become a factor, though this is currently considered less likely.

Gusts of up to 80mph could occur in exposed coastal and hilly areas, according to Chief Forecaster Jamie Russell, who says there’s about a 20% chance of this happening.

Residents should also be aware of the risk of debris on roads, including stones, dirt, shingle, leaves, and fallen branches, and are advised to take precautions where possible.

Cross-Solent ferry services may also be affected, with possible delays or cancellations if conditions worsen. Islanders are encouraged to monitor local weather updates and plan journeys accordingly.
