A major rescue operation took place on the West Wight coastline yesterday evening (Tuesday) after two people became trapped in mud near Compton.
Emergency services were first alerted at around 4.10pm to reports of individuals stuck roughly halfway between Hanover Point and Compton Farm.
With daylight fading and temperatures dropping, Ventnor Coastguard Rescue Team and Needles Coastguard Rescue Team were quickly tasked to the scene.
As the situation developed, additional support was requested from Hampshire & Isle of Wight Fire and Rescue Service.
Two fire appliances from Freshwater and Newport, along with a Rescue Support Vehicle, were sent to assist.
Firefighters worked alongside Coastguard teams to help free the casualties and to establish lighting along the evacuation route in challenging conditions.
By 6.35pm both casualties had been safely rescued.
One male was able to walk to safety, while the second person was stretchered along the beach and taken up the steps at Hanover Point.
The fire service has since stood down, while Coastguard crews remained on scene to continue casualty care. The immediate danger is now over.
Safety Reminder
Hampshire & Isle of Wight Fire and Rescue Service has issued a reminder about the dangers of coastal mud. It can appear solid but may be extremely soft and hazardous.
People are urged to:
• Stick to marked paths and safe routes
• Carry a mobile phone
• Be aware of surroundings
Anyone who becomes trapped, or sees someone in difficulty, should call 999 immediately and ask for the Coastguard, and should not attempt to carry out a rescue themselves.
