Ventnor Rugby Club came together on Sunday (19 April) to honour the life of one of its most cherished figures, Tristan Price, with a special memorial match at Watcombe Bottom.
Tristan, a true legend of the club, tragically lost his life in a road accident earlier this year.
In tribute, an ever-changing Ventnor XV took on an Executive Command XV — a side made up of colleagues from the company Tristan worked for — in a match that reflected both his passion for rugby and the strong connections he built off the pitch.
Played in great spirit and with plenty of commitment from both sides, the result itself was secondary to the purpose of the day: raising money to support Tristan’s family.
Ventnor’s tries came from Tom Branagh, Max Henley, Jack Gilbey, Adam Wade (2), Chris Rose, Max Wheeler (2), Regan Newbury (2), John Waghorn, Tommo Engelgardt and Pat Banks.
Off the pitch, the club hosted a barbecue, raffle and auction, with generous voluntary donations helping to boost the fundraising total.
The event drew strong support from the local community, underlining the impact Tristan had on those around him.
Regan Newbury was named A.J. Wells Man of the Match, while Adam Wade picked up the Red Funnel Moment of the Match award.
Clive Cardwell-Hill took on refereeing duties as well as acting as master of ceremonies, and Danny Winter was recognised as Howden Insurance Supporter of the Day.
Ventnor RFC said the day was a fitting tribute to Tristan, combining rugby, community and generosity — values he embodied throughout his time at the club.

A beautiful way to honour Tristan’s memory. The turnout, the fundraising, and the spirit of the match all reflect a life that truly impacted others. Moments like these remind us how important community and shared passion can be, both on and off the pitch.
And in a very different tone, when you need a bit of distraction after emotional stories like this, something simple and engaging like Escape Road can help you unwind for a while.
