Tributes are being paid to Isle of Wight war veteran Alec Penstone, who has died at the age of 101 following a short illness.
Mr Penstone was one of the Island's best-known Second World War veterans. During his service with the Royal Navy, he took part in 10-and-a-half Arctic Convoys and also served during the Normandy campaign.
After the war, he spent many years helping to keep the memories of those who served alive, regularly sharing his experiences and supporting remembrance activities.
In recent years he became a familiar figure at events across the Isle of Wight, where he was respected for both his wartime service and his commitment to honouring former comrades.
Earlier this year, an appeal for birthday cards after he was admitted to hospital prompted hundreds of messages of support from well-wishers as he celebrated his 101st birthday.
Mr Penstone died on Thursday afternoon.
Funeral details have not yet been released.
