There was glorious sunshine, community spirit and a touch of nostalgia as Celebrate 80 took over Newport’s Victoria Recreation Ground on Saturday, bringing generations together to mark 80 years since the end of World War II. Organised by Newport & Carisbrooke Community Council, the free community event drew thousands of attendees and proved to be an enjoyable day for all the family.

The celebration began with a colourful parade through Newport town centre, organised by the Royal British Legion, featuring Cadets, veterans, Scouts, Guides, Brownies, Rainbows, and vintage military jeeps.

The lively soundtrack was provided by the Medina Marching Band and Vectis Corps of Drums.

Guests of honour included Deputy Lord Lieutenant Maurice Sheen, Isle of Wight Armed Forces Champion Ian Dore, and much-loved Island veteran Alec Penstone, whose presence was warmly welcomed by the crowd.

Heartfelt speeches reflected on the importance of remembrance, the legacy of WWII, and the value of community.

Throughout the day, crowds were treated to live entertainment, including performances from The Bob Howarth Big Band featuring Martin Hoy and Emz Wight, The Boogie Woogie Bluebirds, Sandown & Shanklin Military Band, Jukebox Jazz, and the Independent Arts Singabout Choir.

Children flocked to the popular NERF arena, which stayed busy all day.

Visitors explored military and vintage vehicles, exhibitions invited people to share their wartime memories and Vectis Vintage 40's incredible displays in the Pavilion showed exactly what life was like during the war.

One highlight was ‘Nothing to See Here’, which highlighted the story about a possible German raid on St Lawrence.

Adding to the vintage atmosphere, free Jive lessons from Jive Revive got everyone dancing and people were invited to learn pétanque while local food traders served up a delicious range of treats throughout the day.

NCCC Chair Cllr Vix Lowthion said:

“Celebrate 80 was a joyful success — a free event filled with music, history, and togetherness. With thousands enjoying a warm, welcoming environment, it was truly a day to remember for the local community.”
