The Isle of Wight Council has expanded specialist education provision, creating more local support for children and young people with additional needs.

The move aims to ensure more families can access appropriate education closer to home, reducing the need for out-of-area placements and helping young people stay connected to their communities.

Two major developments have now been completed at former primary school sites.

At the former Chillerton and Rookley Primary School, 30 new places have been created for children with social, emotional and mental health needs.

The site will operate as part of Medina House School, increasing capacity for specialist support on the Island.

Meanwhile, the former Cowes Primary School has been redeveloped to provide 60 places for secondary-age pupils who are unable to attend mainstream school due to medical or other needs.

Run by Lionheart School, the provision offers tailored education to ensure pupils can continue learning in a supportive environment.

Councillor Paul Brading says the expansion marks a significant step forward for SEND education on the Island, adding that more specialist places will help meet demand and make a real difference for families.

He says the priority is to ensure every young person can access the right support without having to travel far from home.
