A busy road in Shanklin has been closed after a sinkhole appeared in the middle of the carriageway overnight.

The hole opened up on North Road late on Tuesday evening, prompting concerns for the safety of motorists using the route.

Residents quickly took action to warn approaching drivers, placing traffic cones around the sinkhole and directing vehicles away from the hazard before highways teams arrived.

Island Roads has since put an emergency road closure in place on North Road between the junctions with St Paul's Avenue and Clarendon Road while the damage is assessed and repaired.

A signed local diversion is in operation, with motorists advised to allow extra time for their journeys and avoid the area where possible.

It is not yet known what caused the sinkhole or how long the road will remain closed.
