Nine junior members of Shanklin Sandown Rowing Club travelled to London last Friday (20 March) to compete in the National Junior Indoor Rowing Championships (NJIRC).
The event, held at the Copper Box Arena in Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park, is one of the UK’s largest junior rowing competitions, attracting athletes from clubs and schools nationwide.
It proved to be a record-breaking trip for the Island club, which returned home with two national titles and four medals – the highest tally they have ever achieved at a single NJIRC event.
Chloe Walker claimed gold in the Girls Year 13 2,000m on her championship debut, winning by an impressive 19 seconds while also setting a new personal best. Isaac King secured the club’s second title in the Boys Year 12 2,000m, finishing nine seconds clear of his nearest rival.
Martha Eggleton, also competing at NJIRC for the first time, took silver in the Girls Year 10 five-minute event, recording a personal best performance.
There were further strong displays across the squad. Rose Collier and Digby Ridgwell both achieved personal bests in their respective events, while Fin Diffey and Alex Collier made their NJIRC debuts.
Three club members racing on behalf of their schools also impressed. Elsie Flower finished 24th in the Year 7 Girls event on her first appearance, Connie Batley-Smith won gold in the Year 10 Girls category, and Amelia Chambers placed 27th in the same race.
