A travel operator with high-profile Island clients has refuted claims that it is set to go into liquidation.
Lighthouse Travel Ltd responded to our request for information — following a tip-off from an anonymous source.
The company statement said:
"We have had financial difficulties due to driver shortages and the economic climate at this time of year.
"Liquidation is the last resort and obviously an option that is being looked into if we cannot find a way forward.
It followed earlier claims from the source that the company’s O-licence has been returned to the traffic commissioner, and that it had no assets, with all vehicles reportedly under finance arrangements.
The source claimed eight drivers have already found themselves out of work, after being told just yesterday of the situation.
The source said that drivers were paid “randomly” instead of on the usual monthly cycle, and that it remains unclear whether they will receive accrued holiday pay or have their pensions affected.
They said drivers may now have to seek contracts off the Island, with opportunities becoming ever-more limited on this side of the water.
They added that a contract with Ryde School had ceased with immediate effect, and said that with Lighthouse Travel out of the picture:
Southern Vectis will now reportedly take over the Ryde School–Cowes contract.
A school-minibus will reportedly assume the Bembridge contract.
The West Wight contract is said to remain unresolved at this time.
In response to these claims, Lighthouse Travel Ltd added:
"The school were made aware that we were having issues and we asked that they put something in place whilst we try to get through this difficult time.
"(Having) purchased the company three years ago, I am very proud of the company and the staff who have all been professional and loyal to me.
"My drivers have a been regularly updated on the company situation.
"Drivers were not paid randomly yesterday, it was agreed to pay staff on a two-weekly basis whilst things have been difficult.
"The company O-Licences have not been handed back and we will be at Ryde School this afternoon.
"If the company closes, I will still be very proud of what we achieved over the last 3 years."
