A 13-bedroom Isle of Wight hotel is set to be converted into residential accommodation after years of declining trade and two years on the market.
Mr and Mrs R. Doe have been granted conditional planning permission to change the use of the former Chad Hill Hotel into an eight-bedroom house.
The plans include multiple lounges, office space, as well as a yoga room and gym.
The hotel closed at the end of October 2024, having been run by its current owners for around 30 years, according to Andrew White Planning Consultancy.
Reasons behind the application included a wider downturn in the hotel trade, alongside the need for significant upgrades and repairs to the building, estimated at around £200,000.
Planners at the Isle of Wight Council said the proposal would bring positive benefits, including contributing to local housing supply and improving the character and appearance of the site, as well as neighbouring amenity.
They concluded these benefits would outweigh what was described as “minor negative harm” to the Island’s tourism accommodation.
Other considerations, including highways, affordable housing and impacts on Solent habitat sites, were deemed neutral.
Permission has been granted with three conditions, aimed at ensuring compliance with planning policy and maintaining a high standard of living for future occupants and nearby residents.
