Emergency crews carried out a complex rooftop rescue in Sandown yesterday evening (Tuesday), involving specialist doctors, paramedics and firefighters.

Flying medics from the Hampshire & Isle of Wight Air Ambulance were called to Pier Passage, off Pier Street, where a seriously unwell patient needed urgent medical assistance.

Emergency services were first alerted at around 5pm, with the air ambulance landing on a nearby rugby pitch off The Fairway at approximately 5.40pm.

Paramedics from the Isle of Wight Ambulance Service, supported by the HEMS team, worked alongside fire crews from Ryde and Shanklin to access the rear of a property and reach the rooftop.

Crews focused on stabilising the patient before carefully moving them to safety, using a ladder as a makeshift ramp during the operation.

It’s understood this is not the first time emergency services have attended the same location.

Almost three years ago, in March 2023, crews were called after an elderly man fell from a ladder onto the roof.
