Plans to introduce new parking charges across parts of the Isle of Wight have been rejected by councillors.

The council's Economy, Regeneration, Transport and Infrastructure Committee voted against two proposals at a meeting last night (Tuesday).

They included new charges in a number of streets and car parks which currently offer free parking.

Areas affected could have included Union Street in Ryde, Sandown High Street, Regent Street in Shanklin, Fort Victoria in Yarmouth and the new Royal Exchange Car Park in Newport.

Other locations included parts of Ventnor, Wroxall, Brighstone, Godshill, St Helens, Gurnard and Shanklin.

The decision follows a petition against the proposed charges which attracted more than 2,300 signatures.

However, a separate proposal to increase existing on and off-street parking fees by 25p an hour will go forward for consideration by the council's Policy, Finance and Resources Committee.

The removal of free parking for electric vehicles in off-street car parks will also be considered.
