Richard Quigley has called for the Isle of Wight to benefit from the Government’s renewed focus on supporting British industry.
The call follows an announcement by Chancellor Rachel Reeves that key government contracts should increasingly be awarded to UK-based firms under a new “Buy British” approach.
The policy will prioritise 4 sectors - shipbuilding, steel, energy and artificial intelligence - with officials monitoring major contracts to ensure the strategy is followed.
Richard Quigley said the move could provide a major boost for the Island’s maritime industry, particularly companies such as Wight Shipyard Co and Diverse Marine.
He said:
“I have spoken directly with the Chancellor and explained that it's not just sensible to buy British built boats, but it would be transformational for the Island and secure boat building at companies such as Wight Shipyard and Diverse Marine for years to come.”
The MP added that the Island has a “proud shipbuilding heritage” and a skilled workforce capable of delivering major national contracts.
He said securing Government work for local firms would strengthen supply chains, create jobs and support long-term economic growth on the Island.
