A brand-new ferry service is set to launch across the Solent next month, giving Islanders more choice when it comes to cross-Solent travel.

From next Thursday (2 October) Quay 2 Quay will begin operating a passenger-only service between Yarmouth Harbour and Lymington Town Quay, supported by both Yarmouth and Lymington Harbour Commissioners.

The service will be run on the MV Kraken – a state-of-the-art, 15-metre catamaran that can carry over 100 passengers. Onboard, travellers will find both indoor and outdoor seating, as well as refreshments available during the crossing.

Initially, the service will operate Monday to Friday, with plans to expand to a full timetable in the months ahead.

Quay 2 Quay director Magnus Gundersen, who lives near Lymington, said the project was born out of local demand:

“It became clear there was a real need in the area for an alternative crossing.
"We’ve worked tirelessly to get the service right and are delighted to finally be launching Kraken.
"This will give customers more choice and improve the overall travel experience.”

The move has been welcomed locally, including by Isle of Wight West MP Richard Quigley, who said:

“Competition in the cross-Solent transport market is very welcome and this offers Islanders even more choice.
"I wish the operators every success and hope residents of Yarmouth and further afield will support the new service.”

Both Yarmouth Harbourmaster Tim Adams and Lymington Harbourmaster Matt Wright also offered their support, describing Kraken as an exciting new addition to their communities.
