Red Funnel is inviting Island residents to apply for its 2026 Island Ambassador and Supported Teams programme, which helps locals take their talents to the mainland for competitions, performances, and events.

Applications are open now and close at midday on Friday 14 November.

Those selected will receive travel support for a year, helping individuals or teams showcase their skills regionally and nationally.

Individuals and small groups of up to six can apply as Island Ambassadors, while larger teams can apply for Supported Team status.

Last year, 16 Islanders were selected, including Crufts hopeful Abs Whittington and her dog Dash, junior archer Summer Chambers, and UK Taekwondo competitor Joe Ramskill.

Twelve teams also took part, including the Isle of Wight Underwater Hockey Team, Vectis Equestrian Club, and the Isle of Wight Squash Team.

Abs Whittington said:

“Red Funnel’s support has been invaluable.
"As there are no agility competitions on the Island, we have to travel to the mainland to compete.
"This support has allowed us to train more, compete internationally, and even win the Starters Cup Final at the London International Horse Show.
"I’m so glad I applied — it’s taken us places I never thought possible.”

Squash team captain Adam Dominey added:

“Travelling to the mainland can be tough, but Red Funnel’s support has helped us compete at a higher level and bring home better results.
"If you’re thinking about applying, do it — it makes a real difference.”

Red Funnel’s CEO Fran Collins said the programme is “a great way to celebrate and champion the incredible talent we have on the Isle of Wight,” and encouraged Islanders of all ages and skills to apply.

Applications must show a strong commitment to a local passion and a readiness to take the next step on the mainland.
