More than 2,600 people have signed a petition against proposed new parking charges on the Isle of Wight, with councillors from several political groups also opposing the plans.

Reform, independent and Liberal Democrat members of the Isle of Wight Council’s Economy, Regeneration, Transport and Infrastructure Committee voted against introducing charges at a number of currently free parking areas.

The proposals included new tariffs in parts of Ryde, Sandown, Shanklin, Newport, Ventnor, Yarmouth, Gurnard, St Helens, Wroxall, Godshill and Brighstone.

Councillors warned the changes could damage town centres, local businesses and tourist attractions.

Reform councillor Reuben Loake said parking charges had already had a damaging effect on high streets in places including Sandown, Freshwater and Newport.

Independent councillor Becca Cameron raised concerns about plans for Fort Victoria, saying free parking was identified as an important part of the site's appeal to visitors.

And Island First Network councillor Paul Fuller said he was strongly opposed to increased charges in Gurnard and Island town centres.

Liberal Democrat councillor Nick Stuart also called for parish councils to be properly consulted, warning that charges in Brighstone could encourage people to travel elsewhere to shop.

However, a separate proposal to increase existing on- and off-street parking charges by 25p an hour will still be considered as part of the council's budget process.

Councillors will also consider removing free parking for electric vehicles in off-street car parks.

The council says its proposals are being considered against a backdrop of significant financial pressure, including its receipt of Exceptional Financial Support and a budget deficit.

The proposed new charges had included locations such as Union Street in Ryde, Sandown High Street, Regent Street in Shanklin, Fort Victoria Car Park and the Royal Exchange Car Park in Newport.

The committee voted against progressing all of the proposed new parking charges.
