A 44-year-old man from Newport has sadly died in hospital following a hit-and-run collision in Newport.

Emergency services were called shortly after 4.30pm on Monday (29 December) to reports of an injured cyclist on the ground at Furrlongs in Pan.

The man, who had been riding a red electrically-assisted pushbike, was initially taken to St Mary’s Hospital before being airlifted to Southampton General Hospital by Hampshire & Isle of Wight Air Ambulance.

Specialist collision investigators carried out a detailed forensic examination of the scene and enquiries led officers to identify that a black Ford Transit van had been involved in the incident.

A 63-year-old man from Godshill was arrested on suspicion of causing serious injury by dangerous driving and failing to stop at the scene.

Police later confirmed that the cyclist, who had been placed on life support, had died.

He passed away in the early hours of New Year’s Eve.

His family is being supported by specially trained officers.

The arrested man has been released under investigation while further enquiries continue.

Police are renewing their appeal for witnesses and any relevant dashcam, CCTV or doorbell footage.

Anyone who was in the area at the time and may have information that could assist the investigation is urged to contact police on 101, quoting reference 44250583390.
