Plans have been submitted to convert part of a Shanklin social club into a new NHS dental practice.

The proposal would see the first floor of Shanklin Conservative Club on Palmerston Road transformed into a dental facility with six treatment rooms capable of treating around 80 patients a day.

The upper floor of the building was previously used as a function space known as The Regency Suite, hosting weddings and private events.

However, the space has become increasingly under-used in recent years.

Applicant James Kingham is now seeking permission to redevelop the area while keeping the ground floor as the existing club.

Planning documents submitted to the council say the Island faces a growing shortage of NHS dental services.

The applicant’s agent said the scheme would provide a “much sought-after and needed facility” for the local community.

They added that improving access to dental care could also benefit the local economy and residents struggling to secure appointments.

The proposal is currently being considered by the Isle of Wight Council.

A public consultation on the application runs until 14 April, with a decision expected in early May.
