A new ‘low-cost’ one-bedroom apartment will be built within a former branch of Barclays Bank on an Isle of Wight high street, against the wishes of a local town council.

The council has approved Mr S. White’s prior approval application for a change of use of office space within 53 High Street, Shanklin, a property which has been vacant since November 2017.

County Hall’s granting of prior approval follows an objection from Shanklin Town Council, in which clerk Stella Janeway said councillors ‘do not agree with the policy that allows change of use from shops/businesses to residential’, adding ‘they would like to maintain shops in the High Street’.

Mr White’s proposed flat has been described as ‘attractive to young professionals seeking quality accommodation’ in a statement from the Phil Salmon Planning consultancy.

It says:

“This scheme represents a major positive opportunity to provide much needed low-cost housing for those that need it in the Bay Area.
“The applicant and developer has a successful track record in converting commercial properties into much needed flats.”

Mr White previously converted neighbouring 55 High Street from a restaurant into four flats.

In a decision report, planners concluded the application was compliant with relevant

legislation.
