A new food outlet championing locally sourced produce has officially opened its doors in Shanklin.

Shanklin’s Mayor, Sara Sheath, cut the ribbon at Eat Wight, a sandwich and spud bar on Falcon Cross Road, which is committed to using Island ingredients and avoiding ultra-processed food.

The business has been launched by Army veteran Kelly Way, who has spent the spring months bringing the venture to life with the help of family and friends.

She said the aim is to create a welcoming space that promotes healthier eating while supporting the local community.

Kelly explained:

“I am passionate about supporting the community in which I live, and Eat Wight is very much about harnessing the quality foods produced on the Island, ensuring good mood food is available for residents and visitors to enjoy.”

The first customer through the door was Patricia Baker, who praised both the team and the menu, highlighting the quality and affordability of the food on offer.

Early feedback has also been positive, with one visitor describing the food as “really nice”, adding that the chilli and baked potatoes were of “great quality” and “good value”, and saying they would return again.

Eat Wight works with a range of local suppliers, including Briddlesford Farm, Hazlegrove Farm, The Lost Mill Bakery and IW Tomatoes, with additional Island-made crafts on display from Solent Sawdust.

Kelly added that support from other local firms, including Yeet Electrical, IOW Drainage and Island Catering Services, had been vital in getting the business open—particularly with ongoing road closures in the area.

She said working with Island businesses is central to Eat Wight’s ethos.
