Dozens of dedicated e-scooter and e-bike parking bays have been installed across the Isle of Wight, with further locations approved despite objections from some residents.

The new bays, including sites in Cowes, Ryde and Newport, form part of the Isle of Wight Council's efforts to improve sustainable transport options and support its climate change and net zero ambitions.

Senior council officer Scott Headey has approved the continued operation of 24 sites which received no objections and have already been installed.

These include Stag Lane near Newport, Vectis Road Bus Stop in East Cowes, Fishbourne Lane Bus Stop and Newport Business Park roundabout.

Other locations, including Kite Hill in Wootton Bridge, Egypt Point and Elm Grove in Cowes, have also been approved following a review of objections.

Concerns raised during consultation included safety, accessibility, antisocial behaviour, visual impact and the proximity of some bays to existing parking locations.

However, a council report concluded that most issues could be addressed through site design, operational management and ongoing monitoring by scheme operator Voi.

The report said the additional bays would improve access to shared e-scooters and e-bikes in areas currently underserved by the scheme.

Rental e-scooters were first introduced on the Island in November 2020, followed by a bike-sharing scheme in October 2022, both initially operated by Beryl.

Voi took over the service in July 2024 under a contract managed by Solent Transport.

The agreement has recently been extended until May 31, 2028.

Under the scheme, users must collect and return rental e-scooters and e-bikes at designated parking locations.

The council says these dedicated bays help reduce street clutter, improve parking compliance and support the safe operation of the service.
