Plans to transform a former shop in the centre of Cowes into a new banking hub with Post Office services have been given the green light.

The Isle of Wight Council has approved proposals to convert 6 High Street, formerly occupied by Poundland, as part of Cash Access UK's programme to improve access to banking services.

The scheme includes alterations to the building's frontage, including a new shopfront, the installation of an external ATM and changes to the entrance, which will be moved forward to align with the existing windows.

A replacement condenser unit will also be installed on the front section of the building's roof.

New signage has been approved as part of the development, including a main fascia sign displaying the words "Banking Hub" alongside a Post Office logo.

A projecting illuminated sign featuring the same branding will also be installed.

Planning documents submitted with the application said the proposals would have a limited impact on neighbouring buildings, Cowes town centre and the Cowes Conservation Area.

The applicant's agent stated that the design had been developed to remain in keeping with other commercial properties along the High Street, while maintaining the existing proportions of the building.

In approving the plans, the Isle of Wight Council concluded that the impact on nearby residential properties would be minimal and that the character of the Conservation Area would be preserved.

The consent is subject to five planning conditions covering issues including design details, compliance with planning policy and measures to prevent disturbance from associated equipment.

Cowes Town Council previously voiced its support for the application, describing the plans as a positive addition to the town centre.

The new facility will provide shared banking services alongside Post Office facilities, helping residents and businesses access essential financial services in the heart of Cowes.
