A new outdoor art trail featuring life-size reproductions of some of the world’s most recognisable paintings has arrived in Newport, with a National Gallery expert describing the Isle of Wight as “something really special”.
The National Gallery’s Art On Your Doorstep exhibition has transformed locations across the town with 18 large-scale reproductions displayed along a one-mile, accessible route through Newport’s streets, squares and harbourside.
The free trail features works by internationally renowned artists including Claude Monet, Vincent van Gogh, Gustav Klimt and JMW Turner.
Alex Kavanagh, Head of Exhibitions at the National Gallery, said Newport was selected because of its strong community identity and public spaces, adding that the Island offered a combination of accessibility, local partnerships and a commitment to connecting people through culture.
The exhibition has been shaped by community involvement, with local groups and a school helping select the artworks displayed around the town.
Each piece has been reproduced at life size and placed in everyday locations, allowing residents and visitors to experience famous artworks outside of a traditional gallery setting.
The trail has been secured through the Shaping Newport partnership, which brings together the Isle of Wight Council, Newport and Carisbrooke Community Council and Newport Business Association to improve the town centre experience.
The exhibition is free to visit and now open across Newport.
