The Environment Agency has issued multiple flood alerts — and one flood warning — across the Isle of Wight as heavy rain continues to affect the Island, with further rainfall forecast through the weekend and into next week.
The alerts and warning were issued today, Friday 6 February, with river levels expected to rise further on Saturday.
A flood warning is in force for Sandown, Yaverland, Yarbridge, Brading and Bembridge along the Eastern Yar, meaning flooding is expected.
The Environment Agency says high river levels following around 20mm of rain in the past 24 hours are already causing problems.
Flooding is affecting Moreton Common Road and Golf Links Road, while Fort Holiday Park
and Sandown Sewage Works could flood as drainage struggles to cope.
Impacts are also possible at Nicholas Close in Brading.
Bembridge sluices are being operated to help manage water levels, but further rainfall on Saturday could worsen conditions.
Several flood alerts are also in place elsewhere on the Island, where flooding is possible.
At Gurnard Luck, high river levels may lead to flooding, particularly affecting gardens or properties closest to the river near Marsh Road.
Low-lying sections of the road could become flooded, and residents are being advised to avoid the area.
Along Lukely Brook from Carisbrooke to Newport, flooding could affect Hunny Hill near Hunnycross Way, Foxes Lane — potentially impacting the aquatics centre — and footpaths near Old Westminster Lane.
The Environment Agency says debris screens are being cleared, and water levels should fall once blockages are removed.
A flood alert is also in force for the River Medina from Blackwater to Newport.
Flooding could affect land, gardens and possibly roads at Blackwater, including Blackwater Hollow on the A3020 near Mill Farm and Sandy Lane.
Meanwhile, an additional alert covers the Eastern Yar and its tributaries from Whitwell to Bembridge, where flooding is already affecting low-lying land, roads, cycle tracks and footpaths.
At Langbridge and Alverstone, the river is close to bank full, with flooding expected to continue on Golf Links Road and Moreton Common Road.
The Environment Agency says up to 20mm of rain is forecast on Saturday, followed by lighter showers on Sunday and further rain early next week.
If forecasts are realised, river levels could remain high and flood risk may continue into next week.
Residents in affected areas are being urged to take precautions, activate any flood protection measures they have, and avoid flooded roads or paths, as floodwater can be deeper than it appears.
