Concern has been raised over the increasing number of empty shops in Ryde, with Ryde Town Council hearing this week that the issue “should concern us”.

Speaking during Tuesday night’s meeting, resident Paul Wyatt questioned how the council engages with businesses and residents, suggesting a dedicated panel should be created to better understand the challenges facing local firms and gather ideas for supporting the town centre.

Mr Wyatt said Ryde needed a “vibrant centre”, adding:

“We’ve got more empty shops in Ryde than we had a year ago, that should concern us.”

Outgoing mayor Diana Conyers acknowledged concerns around uncertainty linked to the Ryde Neighbourhood Board (RNB), while business development manager Allan Bridges said an update on business engagement is expected following discussions with the Isle of Wight Council.

The comments come as RNB chair Steven Holbrook announced a new initiative, We Love Ryde, aimed at promoting local businesses and helping them engage with the board.

Mr Holbrook said the board wants businesses “at the heart of future decision-making”, with further funding opportunities and a community grant scheme set to be launched.
