A lorry driver has been arrested after two pedestrians were struck outside Red Funnel’s Southampton terminal this morning (Friday).

Emergency services were called to Town Quay shortly before 10.40am, where a white lorry collided with a man and a woman, both aged in their 60s, near the terminal exit.

The vehicle, belonging to Newport-based Medina Foodservice, had travelled on the 9.30am ferry from East Cowes and is understood to have been involved in the collision moments after disembarking and exiting the port.

A man in his 60s suffered life-threatening injuries, while a woman in her 60s sustained minor injuries. Both have been taken to Southampton General Hospital for treatment.

Hampshire & Isle of Wight Constabulary has confirmed that a 69-year-old man has been arrested on suspicion of causing serious injury by careless driving. He remains in custody.

A road closure is in place between the Holiday Inn and Town Quay and is expected to remain for some time while investigations continue, with disruption affecting both local traffic and ferry operations.

Red Funnel initially suspended its vehicle ferry service, but sailings have now resumed for foot passengers, cars and small vehicles up to 6.5 metres in length.

A secondary exit is currently being used at the terminal.
