The public toilets at Lake Slipway have been closed after an arson attempt and extensive vandalism left the facilities badly damaged.
The Parish Council is carrying out urgent repairs with a view to reopening in time for Easter.
Chair of the Parish Council, Paul Brading, described the incident as “another example of mindless vandalism in Lake, and across the Bay.”
He added that the financial costs and the potential danger if the fire had spread were significant.
“We will work with the Police and other agencies to hold those responsible to account,” he said.
Vandals reportedly kicked in doors, damaged cubicles and the towel dispenser, and set fires to paper towels, causing destruction that will take time and resources to repair.
Cllr Brading thanked contractors for putting out the fire and making the toilets temporarily safe.
He added:
“We will maintain the Ladies toilet as a unisex facility and will try to reopen as soon as we can.”
