Three Islanders have been recognised in the King’s New Year Honours List, which highlights outstanding service and dedication to communities across the UK.
A total of 1,157 people nationwide have received awards this year.
Among those honoured locally is Charlotte Hodges, principal psychologist at HMP Isle of Wight, who has been awarded an OBE for her significant contribution to rehabilitation within the prison service.
Elizabeth Bilk has been awarded the British Empire Medal (BEM) for her remarkable commitment to the Royal British Legion and the wider Island community.
She has dedicated more than 70 years to fundraising and supporting veterans and their families.
Also receiving a BEM is Gail Bedding, from Bembridge, who has been recognised for her tireless advocacy for disabled children and their families.
A former CEO of Hampshire Parent Carer Network, Gail has worked with organisations including Challengers, FitzRoy and the Hampshire Carer Network to influence policy, support families and challenge inadequate provision.
She has balanced her campaigning work with providing round-the-clock care for her severely disabled son, using her experience to champion positive change and push for better support services.
Her efforts have helped shape decision-making and even contributed to the reversal of funding cuts affecting vulnerable families.
Prime Minister Keir Starmer praised this year’s recipients, saying the list highlights people who put others first, strengthen communities and make a lasting difference to society, thanking them for their dedication and service.
