An accomplished young pianist from the Isle of Wight has reached a major milestone in his musical career, performing for the first time as a soloist with a professional orchestra.
Thomas Luke, 22, appeared alongside the Bournemouth Symphony Orchestra at a special concert in Poole, delivering a programme of romantic music to a packed audience. His performance received a standing ovation.
Thomas, who studies at the Royal College of Music in London, is widely regarded as one of the Island’s most promising young musicians.
He has been performing professionally for several years while continuing his studies, and his appearance with the internationally respected orchestra marks a significant step forward in his career.
Speaking after the concert, Thomas said it was his first performance as a soloist with a professional orchestra and that he hopes it will be the first of many.
He added that opportunities like this are crucial as he continues to establish himself as a professional performer, alongside what he described as a busy schedule in the years ahead.
He also highlighted the dedication required to study and perform at a high level, including regular travel between the Isle of Wight and the mainland.
Thomas has been supported for more than a decade by ferry operator Wightlink, with sponsorship dating back to when he attended the Junior department at the Royal Academy of Music.
He said that support has played an important role in enabling him to pursue his ambitions.
The orchestral debut follows another recent achievement.
Thomas has released his first album, See Me Now, a personal collection of original works that showcases both his performance skills and his development as a composer.
Sam Woodman, Partnerships Marketing Manager at Wightlink, said the company is proud to have supported Thomas over the years and to see him performing with an orchestra of such calibre, describing him as a fantastic ambassador for the Isle of Wight.
