Isle Of Wight Mourns Local Football Legend Darren Powell
The Isle of Wight community is mourning the death of Newport IW club legend Darren Powell, who has died at the age of 44 after suffering a heart attack while playing football.
Darren, known as Daz, suffered the heart attack while playing for Binstead just over two weeks ago.
He received CPR at the scene from spectators, including a young man who had known him since pre-school, before being airlifted to Southampton General Hospital.
Sadly, he did not regain consciousness and died yesterday, surrounded by his family.
Darren made 585 appearances for Newport IW, scoring 73 goals after first joining the club in 2006.
He played his final game in 2024, winning the Russell Cotes Cup and seven Senior Gold Cups during his career.
He also represented the Isle of Wight three times at the Island Games.
Away from football, Darren was remembered as a much-loved member of the Cheeky Chimps community and worked as a teaching assistant in local schools.
Tributes have described him as a local football legend, a great player and captain, and someone who always had time for others.
Newport IW says Darren gave everything for the club and was always willing to step up when needed, describing him as “Mr Newport”.
Condolences have also been shared by football clubs including New Milton Town and Fareham Town.
