The Isle of Wight has been recognised as one of the cleanest coastal areas in England, climbing into the top five in the latest “Brown Flag” beach rankings.
The annual awards, organised by travel site HolidayParkGuru, analyse Environment Agency data to highlight water quality at beaches across the country.
This year, 80% of the Island’s beaches have been rated “excellent” for water cleanliness—an improvement on last year—placing the Isle of Wight fifth overall and above the national average of 68%.
Popular spots including Compton Bay, Shanklin and Ventnor are among those achieving the top rating.
The Island has also avoided being listed among the 15 beaches across England identified as having the poorest water quality.
Organisers say the results show the Isle of Wight is “heading in the right direction” when it comes to clean bathing water, particularly as the summer season approaches.
Nationally, water quality has improved slightly, though some areas continue to face challenges. The data is based on Environment Agency monitoring, which measures bacteria levels in bathing waters between May and September.
The Brown Flag Awards are designed as a light-hearted way to raise awareness of water quality, with the latest results released ahead of the May Bank Holiday weekend.
