Rising stars, international champions and the volunteers behind Isle of Wight sport have been honoured at the 51st Isle of Wight Sports Achievement Awards.

A packed Medina Theatre crowd turned out on Thursday night to celebrate winners ranging from young up-and-comers to those who’ve dedicated decades to local sport.

Among the youngest recognised was seven-year-old Emma Penney for her success in artistic gymnastics, while ten-year-old sailor Harrison Carter picked up the junior boys’ award.

At the other end of the scale, 92-year-old Jim Munro was nominated for his achievements in lawn bowls, and Trevor Thorne, 75, received the prestigious Service to Sport award for his long-standing contribution to Shanklin FC and football on the Island.

The Bay CE School in Sandown took both the primary and secondary school awards, while netball stalwart Chris Grimes was honoured with a lifetime achievement award.

There was also recognition for Island Games success, with golfer Sophie Beardsall picking up an individual award after winning double gold in Orkney.

The Isle of Wight sailing team were also among the winners.

The event was organised for the first time by the newly-formed Isle of Wight Sports Achievement Awards company, with proceeds from sponsorship and a raffle going to the Isle of Wight Sports Foundation to support local sporting causes.

Director Claire Beasley praised both athletes and volunteers, saying the Island’s sporting community continues to shine year after year.

The evening was rounded off with closing remarks from HM Lord Lieutenant, Susie Sheldon.
