Islanders are being urged to stay alert following a series of new scams reported to the Isle of Wight Council’s Trading Standards team (iWasp).
Recent cases include:
EE Phone Call Scam – Residents have reported receiving unsolicited calls claiming to be from EE, attempting to obtain account details. Trading Standards warn these are likely to be scams. If in doubt, hang up and call your provider directly on their official number to verify.
DWP Winter Heating Allowance Text – Islanders have received texts pressuring them to make a claim for Winter Heating Allowance by clicking on a link. This is a scam. Payments are automatic, and you should never click on links within suspicious texts or emails.
DVLA Tax Email Scam – Fraudsters are sending emails claiming a vehicle is untaxed and demanding payment via a link. These messages do not come from the DVLA. Residents are advised to check the sender’s email address – if it is not a valid gov.uk address, it is fraudulent.
Cryptocurrency Ransom Threats – Some victims have received alarming messages claiming their devices have been hacked using spyware such as “Pegasus.” The messages demand cryptocurrency payments and threaten to share compromising content. These are fraudulent attempts to extort money and should be ignored. Do not engage with the sender, and never send money. Such emails should be forwarded to report@phishing.gov.uk.
Trading Standards are reminding residents to remain cautious: never share personal or financial details with unexpected callers, avoid clicking on suspicious links, and always verify official communications directly with the organisation involved.
