Islanders are being asked to check their cupboards, garages, and spare rooms for unused mobility aids and equipment as part of a new community equipment return amnesty launched by the Isle of Wight Council.

The council is urging residents to return items such as crutches, walking frames, wheelchairs, bath lifts, and shower seats that may have been borrowed but are no longer needed.

Once returned, the items will be cleaned, refurbished, and redistributed to people who need them most — helping others regain independence while reducing waste.

Danielle Marriott, operational lead at the Community Equipment Store, said:

“Every piece of equipment returned helps someone regain independence and confidence.
"It’s a simple act that can make a huge difference.
“We know many people keep items just in case, but if you no longer need them, please bring them back.
"Together, we can make sure these resources reach those who really need them.
“This initiative isn’t just about decluttering — it’s about sustainability and supporting our community.
"By returning equipment, you’re helping us reduce waste and provide vital support where it matters most.”

Why return your equipment?

  • Give back to the community: Your unused items can help people recovering from surgery, illness, or injury regain independence.

  • Reduce waste and save money: Reusing equipment protects the environment and saves public funds — in 2024–25 alone, 1,507 walking frames were returned, saving £34,648 in avoided costs.

  • Declutter your home: Free up space while making a real difference to others.

What can be returned:

  • Walking frames and sticks

  • Crutches

  • Bath lifts

  • Shower seats, commodes, and toilet surrounds

  • Furniture raisers

Where to drop off:

  • Community Equipment Store, 19 Barry Way, Newport, PO30 5GY — Monday to Friday, 9am to 3.30pm

  • St Mary’s Hospital, either at the main reception or physiotherapy department, where large blue donation bins are available for returns

For more information, residents can contact the Isle of Wight Council’s Community Equipment Store.
