A motion calling for better support for men’s health and wellbeing has received unanimous backing from Isle of Wight councillors.
The proposal, brought forward by the council’s mental health champion Michael Lilley, aimed to shine a spotlight on the challenges many men face — particularly around mental health and suicide — during the annual Movember campaign.
The Island has one of the highest rates of male suicide in the country, and councillors from across the political spectrum spoke openly and emotionally about the issue during last Wednesday’s meeting (19 November).
Several members shared personal experiences, stressing the importance of encouraging men to talk, spotting signs of loneliness or depression, and supporting community groups such as Men Only IOW and Men in Sheds.
Cllr Lilley highlighted the vital role of local charities and said councils are well placed to work with partners to improve men’s health outcomes. His motion calls for:
A formal response to the government’s developing National Men’s Health Strategy.
A targeted action plan focused on mental health, suicide prevention, early cancer detection and healthier lifestyles.
Future budget consideration for community programmes that engage men — including sports-based activities and mental health training in places like barbers and cafés.
The motion passed with full support from the chamber.
Councillors described the initiative as “vital”, “timely” and “making a real difference” for men across the Island.
